Possibly One of the Most Desireable of the Breed?

With American Muscle Cars, convertible versions are highly sought after by enthusiasts, and the same is probably true with cars produced globally. This Mark 2 not only has the Lotus package but has also been converted into a drophead by Crayford. The seller claims this vehicle is 1 of only 25 produced with this combination however another source indicates more than 40 were built.  A nice set of Minilites have been fitted which really give it a great look. Reportedly this Ford has been registered to 3 owners since 1967 and was recently treated to a new top. The paint and brightwork appear in phenomenal condition.

New Style “Mod” in Michigan

No container needed for this one – Ford already imported it for you in 1964! The seller reports that it has spent most of it’s life in Arizona and an additional 15 years in dry storage. Apparently when the seller acquired this Cortina it came with a full 1965 1500 GT drivetrain most of which has been swapped into this Deluxe.

Even More Power and Performance!

Of the 2,894 Mark 1 Lotus Cortinas produced between 1963 and 1966, 64 were fitted with the Lotus Special Equipment package which further tweaked the power and performance of this already potent Ford. The engine upgrades included in this package were similar if not identical to those that were included when the Lotus Elan was specified with S/E trim. In fact many of the performance bits, such as the close-ratio gearbox, came from the Lotus parts bin to the extent that the motoring press at the time referred to the Lotus Cortina as a “tin-top” version of the Lotus 7. Beyond the single script nomenclature on the rear panel, the Lotus Special Equipment spec included a green coated cam cover that replaced the blue one present on the “standard” Lotus Cortina.

The advertised engine output increased by 10 HP as a result of semi-race (‘C’ type) camshafts being fitted to a cylinder head that featured massaged intake and exhaust ports. Those modifications as well as an increased tubing diameter exhaust system necessitated the re-jetting of the twin Weber 40 DCOE18 carburettors and a re-curved distributor. Other parts of the package included adjustable rear dampers by Armstrong, 3-point seatbelts by Irvin, a leather-covered steering wheel and radial tires by either Pirelli or Dunlop.

They Got Cool Stripes Down Under

Ford of Australia got the Cortina GT just like the UK however in 1969 the GT was offered in a distinctive local version that featured the “racing stripe” package shown here. In addition to the contents of the GT package a blacked-out bonnet with lock pins was available but not shown on this example.

Unbelievably Original Pre-Aeroflow Super

Oh my goodness is this a beautiful example! The seller claims that this is an “EXTREMELY ORIGINAL EXAMPLE IN WONDERFUL CONDITION” and we totally understand why he is yelling!

Still known as a Consul Cortina in 1964 when it left the Dagenham plant, as evidenced by the stylish nameplate on the bonnet, the person who ordered this vehicle also ticked the “Super” trim specification on the form. This trim included the chrome accents on the body side feature lines which really set this spec apart from lesser Cortinas.

Mark 2 Savage Estate Up For Auction

This genuine 1970 Savage Cortina Estate is up for auction at the The NEC Classic Motor Show Sale in Birmingham, UK. The pre-auction estimate is  £24,000.  When you think about how rare and just how cool this car is – and the remarkable condition – that doesn’t seem like too much money. On top of that this vehicle is reported to be Jeff Uren’s personal car! Jeff Uren was the founder of Race Proved Ltd and the creator of the Cortina Savage.

BYC 831J is equipped with an automatic transmission and of course the tuned, 140 HP 3.0 litre Essex V6.  The Savage vehicles are certainly Muscle Cars in the American tradition – the fitting of an engine from the large-car range into a vehicle of the mid-size range.

One of the Rarest Cortinas on the Planet

This little Woody-optioned Cortina Estate is said to be one of only about five known to exist in Aeroflow spec. It is quite remarkable that the faux wood trim has remained in such good condition, however at the time these photographs were posted on Car-from-UK.com the interior had seen better days.

In this case the ‘E’ is for Executive

Up for auction in Swainby, which is about 59 kilometers north of York in the picturesque county of North Yorkshire, UK we find this gorgeous 1970 1600E. In October of 1967 Ford of Britain announced the availability of a luxury/performance model that would move the Mark 2 into a new sales segment.

The Cortina 1600E would become a very popular option in this market niche as the model offered many performance and luxury features for a reasonable amount of money. In fact, according to author and Cortina expert Graham Robson, the 1600E would be the first Cortina recognized as a classic.

It’s already here! Mark 1 recently imported to the US

Gotta love this left-hand driver – no price is given but it looks like a great little specimen. And the process of importing it has already been done for you! This is certainly one to consider carefully.

This 1965 Deluxe 1500 model shure shows nicely in photos; the panels looking smooth and the brightwork clean and straight. The outside rear-view mirrors may have a case of the floppies so the new owner may want to address that straight away.

Briefly – Roy Brown Jr., Car Designer

Designing and engineering vehicles for Ford in the States, Mr. Brown had been transferred to Ford’s British arm from Dearborn shortly after designing the Edsel. Yes, Roy Brown Jr. designed the Mk 1 Cortina – then moved back to the States where he eventually spent just shy of 40 years in retirement. There is a ton more to this story – from the life and times of an automotive designer in 1950s America to the drama around the fall of the Edsel to the artistic resurgence in England and the success there. What a phenomenal career. From a design perspective the Edsel was a triumph – from a marketing perspective the Cortina was as well.

There certainly is a radical difference in design language used between the Edsel and the Cortina – but if you look at the other cars Mr. Brown designed it is clear he was versatile with form and function. It seems he drove an Edsel late in life; I wonder if he had a Cortina.
